Nigeria is a country known for its vibrant culture and unique fashion sense. While some fashion trends in Nigeria are timeless and classic, others are just plain ridiculous and funny. In this article, we will take a look at some of the most ridiculous fashion trends in Nigeria that should be avoided at all cost.
AGBADA WITH SNEAKERS AND SUNGLASSES
Agbada is a traditional Nigerian attire that is worn by men for special occasions. In recent years, Nigerian celebrities have been pairing agbada with sneakers. While the trend is supposed to be edgy and modern, it just comes off funny and ridiculous. Thetraditional attire clashes with the casual footwear or sunglasses. An insight is when Enioluwaofficial paired the new astro boy boots with agbada. As a Nigerian, I am speaking for fellow Nigerians when I say I want this trend to subside.
ANKARA OVERLOAD
Ankara is a traditional Nigerian fabric that is known for its bold, colorful designs. Despite that Ankara is such a beautiful fabric and it is one of the many things that define us as Nigerians. Nigerians are known to wear Ankara from head to toe. While thetrend is supposed to be a celebration of Nigerian Culture, some Nigerians are known to overdo. An insight is the pandemic period where Ankara masks became a trend and Nigerians will ensure whatever Ankara outfit they wear was paired with an Ankara mask. Another insight is when the Nike made out of Ankara fabric was trending, where Nigerians will replace the Nike symbol in their shoes with Ankara.
THE AGBADA TREND
The “Agbada” is a traditional male Nigerian outfit. However, in recent years, women in Nigeria wear Agbada as well. While Some Nigerians find this trend intriguing, we also have Nigerians like me that find this trend funny and absurd and should be stopped. Some couples go for events wearing Agbadawith the male wearing it with a pair of palm slippers or shoes while the female with heels which I find very funny and not romantic. Some Nigerian females have gone the extra mile in proving me wrong that this trend is not weird or absurd by how they pull up to events in Agbada and look good in it.
THE “GUCCI GANG” TREND
Another trend that has taken Nigeria by storm is the “Gucci gang” trend. The trend involves wearing head to toe Gucci outfits in order to show off your wealth or status. It is believed by most Nigerians that those who dress up in Gucci outfits are the extremely rich Nigerian celebrities like Davido who seems to love the brand a lot or the young Nigerian youths who are labeled “ yahoo boys” who cannot afford the original ones so they just settle for the fake ones.
At the end of the day, fashion is all about expressing yourself and having fun. But when it comes to these ridiculous trends, we cannot help but wonder if Nigerians have taken it too far or whether these trends are what make us who we are. One thing is Nigerians will always make a statement wherever they go with what they wear and in a crowd of ten thousand with one Nigerian, you will always recognize the Nigerian because they seem to stand out in whatever they wear.
